James Grady Collins was born on November 15, 1926, the son of Mabel and Nathan Collins. Raised in Florida, Mr. Collins grew to be a man who would find a purpose in serving his country. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II (1944-46) before transitioning to the U.S. Army under which he saw action in Korea and Vietnam. After his retirement from the military, Mr. Collins would serve as the Chief of Security for John Amos, the founder of AFLAC. A well-seasoned soldier, Mr. Collins was an undeniably strong man; however, he credited his strength to Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. Everyone who knew him knew Mr. Collins to be a gregarious soul who could talk to anyone with his magnetic personality. He was a generous and giving man who helped anyone in need.
The 32nd degree Shriner, James Grady Collins, loved classic movies, shooting pool, swing music, and swing dancing. However, what brought him the most joy in life would be seeing his family and loved ones happy. He married Sarah Nell Barberee in 1969 and enjoyed life with her until her passing 2008. He had a big heart that extended especially to the younger children in his family. He enjoyed visiting with the family; however, you would find Mr. Collins playing and teasing with the littlest family members whenever they were around.
Preceded in death by his father, mother, and loving wife, Sarah Nell Barberree Collins, Mr. Collins is survived by two sons Jimmy (Sharon) and Jerry (Libby); two other children whom he raised as his own Deborah Hardy Thomas and Dave Hardy; and five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law who were very special to him, Jimmy and Linda Wetzel; several nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever be dear to his heart.
