The son of Curtis F. Helms (deceased) and Mary Camp Helms (deceased). James sister, Marjorie A. Bryant (deceased). He was married to JoAnne B. Helms on February 14, 1984 until her passing on January 5, 2021. He was born July 14, 1937 and graduated from Central High School, Phenix City Alabama, Class of 1955. At the age of 23, James enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He valued his service highly and attained the rank of IC2. As part of his service from November 10, 1960 to November 9, 1964 he was station on the USS Prairie. He was then in the Reserves until his honorable discharge November 9, 1966. He received a Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
James is survived by James G. Tully (stepson), John M. Brewer (Sue), nephew, Julia B. Fullerton (niece), Mary C. Brewer (niece), Rebecca A. Perry (Greg) niece, Jeanine N. Mut (Sarah) great niece, Darren M. Mut (Emily) great nephew and three great great nephews. His love ones will remember him as a loving and kind husband, father and Uncle.
A service honoring the life of James A. Helms will be held March 18th at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary.
