James Boyd Maharrey passed away Friday, June 8, 2018 in Columbus, Georgia surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 21, 1938 in Pontotoc, Mississippi to Ouida Bell Maharrey and Joseph Blake Maharrey.
James attended Auburn University, class of 1961. He married the love of his life, Ann, on April 3, 1976 in Lake Toxaway North Carolina. They were blessed with two children, Steven and Beth.
James retired from the U.S. Army as a LTC after serving two tours in Vietnam. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with one Silver Oak Leaf Cluster and V Device, the Army Commendation Medal with three Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and V Device, and others.
He was a beloved longtime math teacher at Calvary Christian School and Columbus Tech. He loved Auburn University and was an avid fan of Auburn Tigers football. What James loved the most was spending time with family and especially his grandchildren. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus.
James was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Barbara Terry; and a nephew, Stephen Michael Terry. He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Maharrey; son, Steven and wife Kelly; daughter, Beth Hanes and husband Kris; grandchildren Summer Maharrey, Kolton and Kaden Hanes. A sister, Sandra Trent, also survives him.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 11, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. The family will hold a visitation on Sunday June 10, 2018 from 2:00pm until 4:00pm.
