

James Albert Nix, Jr., age 85, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd., Columbus, GA on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 3:00 PM. Burial will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday evening from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.
Mr. Nix was born on December 7, 1925 in Columbus, GA the son of the late James Albert Nix, Sr. and Arrie Watson Nix. Following graduation from Jordan High School in 1944 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a 20mm gunner on the USS Chemung, S.S. James Wheeler, USAT Charles Lummis and the S.S. Allen C. Balch, during World War II. He was the recipient of the American Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.
Following the war, Mr. Nix returned to Columbus. In 1947, he married Carolyn Conway and raised four children. He worked for Southern Bell for 35 years until his retirement in 1985.
Mr. Nix was a charter member of Striplin Terrace United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Columbus Racing Pigeon Club and he was the Superintendent of the Chattahoochee Fair Poultry Show for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Nix of Columbus; four children, Ronald Nix (Belinda) of Gainsville, FL, Sharon Dolliver (Smith) of Gordon, GA, Pamela Alexander (John) of Fortson, GA and Gary Nix (Cathy) of Alabaster, AL; seven grandchildren, K.B. Howe, Jr., Tiffany Smith, Cindy Plemons, Natalie Nix, Jake Nix, Amber Nix and Amanda Alexander; and several great-grandchildren.
