James Stanford, a beloved figure, passed away on February 23, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on August 11, 1943 in Columbus, Georgia to the late Sarah Crosby Stanford and James C. Stanford, Sr. James led a life marked by dedication and love for his family and community.
For nearly six cherished years, James shared a beautiful marriage with the love of his life, Linda Dianne Jones. Though their time together was brief, their love endured. On February 23, exactly 52 years after Linda's passing, he gently went to be with her once more. He never remarried, saying no one ever touched his heart the way she did. His last words were a quiet testament to that love: "I am home." James is also preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Proudfit. He is survived by his four children: Denise Braithwaite (Jim), Donna Murphy (Mike), Derrick Stanford (Tiffany Hull), and Dana Baumgart (Matt). His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Holly Baumgart, Heather McCorkle (Colin), Matthew Baumgart, Ansley Herston (Kaleb), Amy Hull, Christian Murphy (Mathilde), and Grace Murphy, as well as his great-grandchildren, Easton McCorkle, Emberlynn McCorkle, Nicolas Murphy, and Brynlee Rae Herston. He is also remembered by his niece, Emily Main (Bryan) and nephew, Chris Proudfit (Ann) and great niece, Audrey Main and great nephew, Brandon Main, and many cousins.
He spent 17 years as a computer technician for TSYS, a career that showcased his skills and commitment to his work and passion for computers.
James had a passion for the Atlanta Falcons, Georgia Bulldogs, and Atlanta Braves. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and engaging in CB radio. His love for his family and grandchildren was paramount, and he always prioritized them in his life.
His enduring legacy is a testament to always putting family first and doing the right thing.
James' family will visit with friends and family on Monday, March 2, 2026 from 12:30 PM until 1:30 PM at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road Columbus, GA 31907. Family and friends will go in procession into Parkhill Cemetery for a graveside funeral service at 2:00 PM with Reverend David Mills officiating.
