Janice Fletcher

February 1, 1952November 15, 2021

Janice Fletcher passed away on November 15, 2021 in her daughter’s home in Sandy Springs, GA. She was surrounded by her three daughters, Emily Fletcher-Davis, Corrie Fletcher, and Leanne Nichols. Janice had been diagnosed with terminal cancer five months earlier and was living with her oldest daughter, Emily, in Sandy Springs while receiving treatment at Emory. Apart from this, Janice lived her entire 69 years in Columbus, GA, where she was a schoolteacher and an active member of Edgewood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Billy Fletcher, who passed away in September of 2012. They shared a deep and enduring love, and Janice missed him greatly.

Janice taught school for over 38 years, primarily at Christian Heritage Academy and Calvary Christian School. She considered it a great privilege to watch the children she taught grow into adults who love and serve the Lord. She impacted the lives of so many children and families, who continued to reach out in gratitude and appreciation even well into adulthood. But what Janice Fletcher loved most in life was simply spending time with friends and family.

In addition to her daughters, Janice is survived by her sons-in-law, Andrew Davis and Jared Nichols, and six grandchildren: Connor Davis, Caden Davis, Cullen Davis, Willow Davis, Rylan Nichols, and Asa Nichols. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Hendrick.

Family will visit with friends on Sunday November 21, 2021 at Edgewood Baptist Church 3564 Forrest Rd. Columbus, GA 31907 from 1:30 PM until 3:00 PM. A service to celebrate her life will be at 3:00 PM at the church with Reverend Jonathan Merritt officiating. Janice will be laid to rest in Parkhill Cemetery on Monday November 22, 2021 with her family in attendance.

Janice and her sister, Linda, traveled to Augusta to the services for my late sister, Sherma Ashcraft, on January 2, 2018! I was indeed moved by this gesture! I always treasured the close ties with my daddy’s family in middle Georgia; and treasured the family reunions as we grew older! My heart has been heavy since BJ phoned me in later summer of Janice’s illness! God’s blessings on your family at this homegoing time! Joy Newton, Matthews, Georgia

Ms. Fletcher was my 5th grade teacher at Rigdon Rd Elementary in 77-78. She was pregnant with one of you girls that school year. We reconnected many years later when my children attended Calvary. She was a kind soul. So patient and kind. She will be missed!

I went to Jr High and High School with Janice. Those sweet years and fond memories are there even after all this time. When we are young we never think that one day we will experience the passing away of our schoolmates. May God Bless the family during this sad time.

Mrs. Fletcher was THE BEST teacher I have ever had, and that was in the fourth grade. She made learning fun and always encouraged me to believe in myself. She was a shinning example of God’s love for others. Every time I saw her she would hug me tight and tell me I was in her constant prayers. This was 20+ years after she had taught me. I hope one day I can share that type of love with people. I’m better for having known Mrs. Fletcher and she will be so missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with this family during this sad time. I remember so many good times we shared since we met at Daniel Jr. High. We continued our friendship through Arnold Jr. High, then at Jordan High School. I was honored to serve at the reception of she and Billy's wedding. My last visit with her was back in the early Spring of this year. She called and wanted to reminisce about our high school days so I brought over my annual and high school memories book and we laughed and talked for a long time. - So many precious memories - I will always remember her with love and kindness. Her friendship will forever be in my heart.
