Jennifer C. "Jenn" Dermody, age 51, of Waverly Hall, Georgia passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2024. A visitation for the family and friends of Jennifer will be held Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 2:50 PM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 550 S. St., Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia, the funeral service will begin at 3:00 PM.
Jenn was born on November 5, 1972 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; the daughter of Johnnie Max and Debora Hurst. She spent her younger years in the area in and around St. Amant Parrish, Louisiana before moving to Utah. RIGHT BEFORE HER SENIOR YEAR!!!! There, she graduated from Layton High. Rumor has it she was salty about that move up until the day she died.
Jenn is known by many names: “That cute Jenn Dermody,”and “Queen Jenn.” Also “Mom,” “Mama Jenn” and “Aunt Jenn” to a surprisingly large number of people with no blood relationship to her at all. She always said it is because she is so “approachable,” while her husband insists it is because she was a nut magnet.
But the truth is, she squeezed a lifetime of lovin’ on people into 51 short years. She was so good at it.
She learned by example from at least five women that we can think of that she called “Mom.” They loved, nurtured and protected her as she grew into the Jenn we all know and love. In turn, she made a life out of loving, nurturing and protecting so many more. She absolutely adored her three kids and relished her role as a stay-at-home mom. But her love also extended far beyond the home. She touched many others, young and old. She met people where they stood and somehow managed to also challenge them to grow and do better. She did it all without judgement or condemnation – except for Nick Saban, she couldn’t stand that guy.
Some of her nurturing of others came while in volunteer assignments or “callings” in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in wards and branches across the U.S. But most of it came from just seeing a need or an opportunity. The “callings” came and went, but the relationships remained. She was still in touch so many of her “young women” that are now living their own adult lives. She loved people and loved to lift them up.
She loved Jesus, LSU football, Broadway musicals, Harry Potter and that movie where Drew Barymore has amnesia and Adam Sandler has to make her fall in love with him again every day.
Jenn was a woman of many talents. She was a gifted musician and an inspiring public speaker. She made a mean etouffee. And if there was an empty parking lot with just one car or obstacle in it, she could somehow manage to back into it.
Jenn is preceded in death by her father, Johnnie Max Hurst.
Survivors include her extremely handsome and charismatic husband, Bill Dermody. three predictably brilliant and good-looking children, Erin (Chris) Dermody, Seth Dermody, Sean Patrick Dermody; her mother, Debora Hurst; sister, Daniela Hurst (Willis) Arrington; brother, Neal (Staci) Hurst and her two fiercely loyal and undeniably dopey Rhodesian Ridgebacks Zsa-Zsa and Georgie.
