Steve was born on May 22, 1962, to Christine and Bobby Rushing in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. He attended and graduated from Smith Station High School, in 1980, and was married to the love of his life, Barbara, for 25 years. A follower of Christ, he was a member of Kirkland Memorial Baptist Church. He was employed at Mead Westvaco as a Stationary Engineer for 32 years. He loved the beach, specifically Hawaii, diving, traveling, watching NASCAR, flying as an airplane pilot and riding around in his Corvette. He was a jokester and an avid Alabama fan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Bobby Lewis Rushing and Christine Rushing; his father-in-law, Robert E. Bennett, great nephew Camren and great nephew John. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Rushing; his brother, Robert Lewis Rushing; his sister, Debra Ming (Kenneth); nieces and nephews, Jimmy “Jerry” Medley, Daniel Rushing (Holly), Ashley Yasenchok (Jarrod), Austin Ming and Madison Ming Driver (Justin), his mother-in-law Carolyn C. Bennett, his sister in law, Robin Amanda Bennett (Steve Painter); great nieces and nephews Hunter, Caiden, Camden, Collins, Asher, Lewis, Justin Jr, & Georgia.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Striffler Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, Georgia 31907. A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel. The burial will follow at Parkhill Cemetery.
