Joseph Dillon Simmons, Jr., age 87, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2020. Joseph was born October 31, 1932 in Dallas, Texas to his late parents, Joe, Sr. and Loretta Griffin Simmons. After high school Joe joined the Navy and proudly served his country during the Korean War. Following the Navy, he enrolled into the University Of Texas at Arlington. He met the love of his life on a blind date. Sixty-two years later, she was still the love of his life. Joe finished his working career in Columbus at Lummus Corporation. He loved his family and was involved in all their activities, sometimes having to travel great distances to be their biggest supporter. He was a wonderful role model for his children and enjoyed telling stories of his youth to his grandchildren with such good humor. Joe’s hidden talent was his amazing wood working skills. His legacy will live on through his family and the furniture he built for them.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Florence Simmons; son, Bill Simmons, and his three daughters, Alexandra, Christina and Samantha, their husbands and four children; daughter, Lori Barks, her husband, Jerry, and their children, Jake and Emily; sister in-law, Ann DeLoura, and her children, Michael, Catherine and William; and nephews, Tom and Bill Simmons; other family members and many friends.

I tried to send a memory a couple of days ago and I have yet to see it so here goes again.

Joe was the best boss I ever had in my 65 years of working. He taught me so much about the cotton business that carried me to retirement. Joe was the type of person that made it easy to do the right thing the first time because he was there for you if you needed help. A more honest man I have never met. He was sincere and direct and he would bring the best out of anyone. It is truly a sad time. We would chat in church before the service and he always wanted an update on what was going on. I would bring him up to date and he would smile. I would also like to say he was one of the most respected men I ever knew. He will always be in my mind!

Some of my fondest memories of my daddy are my basketball games and that he made every single one, even when he was traveling for work! He was so very supportive in everything I did!

Love and miss you daddy. ❤️
