Columbus, Georgia- CSM (Ret) Junior Cook, age 90, resident of Columbus, died on Friday, April 26, 2013 at his residence. Funeral services are scheduled at the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus on Thursday, May 2, 2013, 12:30 p.m. with Reverend David Howle officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Alabama. A visitation reception will be held prior to the service on Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 11:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. Light hors d'oeurves will be served. Attire for the visitation and service is casual.
CSM Cook, son of the late Joseph Cook and Susan Glass Cook, was born December 1, 1922 in Guntersville, Alabama. He was retired from the U.S. Army where he honorably served for over 28 years. During his military career, CSM served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. For his exceptional valor and service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and numerous other medals and ribbons. After retirement from the military he began another career serving faithfully as Manager of European Health Spa and later sold automobiles at Jon A. Pope Auto’s.
CSM Cook was preceded in death by a sister, Mamie Snow; two brothers, Roy Cook and Richard Cook; and a grandson, Christopher Cook. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margie Cook of Columbus; two daughters, Barbara Lawrence and her husband Randy Lawrence of Phenix City, Alabama and Christine Toomey and her husband Kenna of Fayetteville, Georgia; one son, Robert Cook of Columbus; one sister, Dessie Betz of Gadsden, Alabama; three grandchildren, Randy Lawrence, Jr. and his wife Crystal of Phenix City, Alabama, Chad Cook of Columbus and Kristen Toomey of Fayetteville, Georgia; two great-granddaughters, Leah Cook and Emma Lawrence; former daughter-in-law, Charlene Koonce of Columbus; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
