Lloyd was born on December 30, 1927, in Stewart County, Georgia to the late Troy T. Ammons, Sr. and Lucy Mason Ammons.
He was educated in the Stewart County School system and was a student at Georgia Southwestern University when he joined the United States Navy to serve during the end of World War II. After his enlistment ended, he married the love of his life, Joyce Davenport, and then began his career with Burnham Van Service where he retired over forty years later.
Mr. Ammons was a musician. From a very early age he loved listening and keeping time to the music playing on the Victrola in his grandmother’s house. He began piano lessons as a child and continued to play throughout his life. In the early 1970’s he started a quartet and sang and played in many churches and organizations throughout Georgia. He shared the story of traveling all the way to Atlanta as a child with his music teacher to sing a solo on WSB radio, while back home in Stewart County, Georgia his mother and her friends gathered around the radio to listen to him sing.
From the beginning of his marriage Lloyd and his wife became members of Edgewood Baptist Church. He sang in the choir, served as a deacon and in other positions – always faithful to take his family to church by both modeling and teaching them about God’s love.
Mr. Ammons, fondly known to family as “Poppie” and “Uncle Lloyd” was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Joyce Davenport Ammons in 2007, brothers, George Frank Ammons in 1992, Joseph Harold Ammons in 2017 and oldest brother Troy T. Ammons, Jr. on January 9, 2018.
He is survived by his daughters Sharron Brogdon (Jeff) of Columbus, and Nancy McDonald (Tim) of Richmond, Virginia. He was the loving grandfather of three grandsons, three great grandchildren and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
A Service will be held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
