

Martha Louise “LouLou” Smalshof , age 75, passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd., Columbus,GA 31907, on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 1:00 PM with Reverend Helen Berenthien officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 PM. Mrs. Smalshof was born in Bonifay, Florida on January 16, 1936 to the late Mancy and Bertie Lee Davis. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Thomas Heyward Smalshof and her daughter, Constance (Connie) Collins Anderson. She is survived by her daughters Kathryn Louise Igou (Kelly) Roswell,GA, Cynthia Lucille Terry (Ron) Lawrenceville, GA, and Martha Louise Spencer (Chris) Canton, GA, as well as her sister, Jean Rodgers (James) of Pine Mountain, GA. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Leigh Terry, Jessica Terry Hughes (James), Collins Anderson, Becca Terry, Thomas Igou, Lissie Terry, Andrew Spencer, and Ashlyn Spencer; niece and nephew, Jill Howell (Keith) of Spruce Pine, NC and Jeff Jacobs (Elaine) of Pine Mountain Valley, GA; and friends and extended family and staff at Spring Harbor. Louise was a retired legal secretary. She was a member of St. Luke Methodist Church. She was a lifelong learner and even into her seventies attended college classes at Columbus State University where she studied English literature. One of the highlights of her late-in-life college experiences was a trip to Russia with a group of CSU students to study Russian literature, and last summer, a Baltic cruise to St. Petersburg with her family. LouLou loved time with her family whether it was annual trips to the beach, Auburn football tailgates or laid back weekends at the family “Happy Place”-the cabin at the river. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Oasis Adult Respite Program c/o Kay Saunders, Bradley Center, 2000 16th Ave., Columbus, GA 31901.
