Columbus, Georgia- Marjorie Gilmer-Goolsby, 84, formerly of Evergreen, Alabama passed away on October 6, 2013 in Columbus, Georgia.
Funeral Services honoring her life will be held at the Evergreen Baptist Church, Evergreen, Alabama on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 11:00 AM with interment to follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Evergreen. Visitation in Columbus will be from 4:30 PM until 6:30 PM on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Striffler-Hamby 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia.Visitation in Evergreen will be Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the Cope Funeral Home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM CST.
Mrs. Marjorie was born September 14, 1929 in Evergreen, Alabama to the late John H. and Lucille Smith Jones. Mrs. Marjorie was a resident of Evergreen, Alabama for 65 years, married to the late Thurmond H. Gilmer, until his death in May 1985. They had one daughter, Thurmond Ann Gilmer Boles. Ann and her husband Arnold live in Columbus, Georgia where Marjorie met and married Mr. J.P. "Preacher" Goolsby (Goolsby Foods) who preceded her in death in 2002.
Mrs. Marjorie was affectionately known by family and school friends as "Sister". She attended Lyeffion Elementary School, and graduated from Evergreen High School. Mrs. Marjorie was a member of the Evergreen Baptist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was the Conecuh County Campaign Coordinator for former Gov. George C. Wallace for more than 20 years.
Other than daughter Thurmond Ann Boles and her husband Arnold, survivors include two beloved grandchildren. Granddaughter, Julie Boles Brown and her husband David and great-grandchildren, Rachel Marjorie, Jonathan Daniel, Elizabeth Boles, and Luke David Brown, from Nashville, Tennessee; Grandson, John Blackburn Boles and his wife Janie, great-grandchildren, John Jr., Annabella and James Paul from Auburn, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, who loved her dearly.
Mrs. Marjorie loved her God, her Family, her Church, and her Home Town, Evergreen, Alabama. Often described as a "Southern Lady" Marjorie was loyal, generous, and kind. She made a lasting impression on many people and eagerly shared her wisdom and love with family, friends, doctors, nurses, caretakers, chaplains, and the residents at Morningside Assisted Living, where she spent the past four years. Mrs. "G" 's big smile will be fondly remembered. Donations may be made to the Evergreen Baptist Church building fund, Evergreen, Alabama 36401 in her memory.
