Martha M. Burge, 92, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on Friday April 21, 2023 at her under the care of Columbus Hospice. She was born on May 6, 1930 in Nurnberg, Germany to the late Kristiane Franz Uhrmann and Josef Uhrmann.
At a young age, Martha loved music and studied at a music conservatory in Germany for five years where she learned to play the Zither, a German instrument. She met the love of her life Johnny M. Burge while he was stationed with the U.S. Army in Germany. They married in December of 1953. After Johnny’s retirement from the Army, Columbus, Georgia was called home. She was Christian by faith and attended the New Apostolic Church.
Martha took great pride in caring for her family. She was a very talented seamstress, an excellent cook of both German and American dishes, and an exquisite hostess. She was an elegant lady who loved her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and especially loved her.
She leaves her loving memory to be cherished by her daughter, Eva “Evi” Burge (Michael) Fox; son Alfred “Al” (Elizabeth) Burge; brother Walter (Jane) Uhrmann; niece Petra Uhlemann; nephew Stefan Uhrmann; brother-in-law Jim (Inez) Burge; sister-in-law Virginia Burge; nieces: Tina Marie, Betty Kay, Cherie Jane, Pam and Amy; nephews: Jeff, Bruce and Bob; and many other family members and friends.
Family will visit with friends on Thursday, April 27, 2023 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907. A service to celebrate her life will be at 11:00 AM in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. Burial will be at 1:30 PM in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Alabama.
