Marvin Floyd Smith, Jr., 71, of Columbus, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Columbus Hospice with his family by his side. Marvin was born in Edison, Georgia on June 20, 1951, to Marvin Floyd Smith, Sr. and Mary Evelyn Hilton Smith. He was a 1969 graduate of Columbus High School and a 1973 graduate of the University of Georgia with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and Industrial Geography. He worked for Dames and Moore, worldwide environmental and industrial planners for several years and was a retired environmental consultant.
Marvin was a devoted and loving son who, along with his sister, cared for his mother for several years as she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. He was a much beloved uncle to his niece and nephews, and he enriched their lives with his care and presence. He was also a good brother to his only sibling, always ready with advice and help when needed.
Before his own health declined, Marvin was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. He was a voracious reader of books whose topics ranged from World War II to science and thrillers. He was also a master gardener who specialized in growing tomatoes and Silver Queen corn, much to his family’s delight.
Marvin was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his sister, Lynn Smith; brother-in-law, Michael Smith; nephews Michael David Smith, Jr. and Daniel Smith; and niece, Evelyn Smith, all of Columbus.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, April 21, 2023, in the Morgan Methodist Cemetery in Morgan, Georgia, with Rev. Roxane Gwyn of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, officiating.
