A chapel service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 22, 2011 in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA, 31907 with Pastor Judy Hay officiating. Interment will follow in Parkhill Cemetery. Mrs. Monk’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends this evening from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
Mary Lou was born June 11, 1930, daughter of the late Milton and Elizabeth Kline Long. She retired from the family business, Thermal Contractors, where she worked for many years alongside her husband. She was a member of Sherwood Presbyterian Church and the Gallops Senior Citizen Center where she enjoyed teaching line dancing. Mary Lou was loved by all who met her due to her genuine concern for others. She also loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, James M. Monk, Sr., and her sister, Elizabeth Olson.
Survivors include her son, James M. Monk, Jr. and his wife, Beth of Phenix City, AL; her daughter, Deborah Monk Dodd and her husband, Pete of Columbus, GA; nine grandchildren, James Curtis Monk and his wife, Brandie, Patrick Kyle Monk, Tyler Anderson Monk, Christian Tyler Shelley, Kaleb Aaron Shelley, Hillary Kline Bell, Kendall Marie Bell; Kim Shelley, and Jennifer Corbett and her husband, Chance; three great grandchildren, Landon Monk, Alice Corbett and Colten Corbett; special family friend, and loving caretaker, Jennifer Campbell.
