Visitation for Family and Friends will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, St. Elmo, 4071 Macon Rd, Columbus, Georgia 31907, on September 23, 2026, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. A Graveside Service will take place at Riverdale Cemetery, 1000 Victory Dr., Columbus, GA 31901, on September 23, 2026, at 2:00 pm.
Michael was a devoted husband and loving father. He loved being granddaddy to Michael and Amber. Most people know him by "Shitty", if you know him you know.
He loved to laugh and joke with everyone. He never met a stranger. He worked hard and loved harder.
He started working in the cotton mill at the age of 16. He worked at Swift Spinning Mill, then Mertis Yarns in Columbus. There was not a job he couldn't run. He trained numerous people during his career. He loved supporting the women's softball team and attending most games back in the day.
Michael was married to the love of his life, Judy Gail Hammock, for 56 years. He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Danni LaFond (Robert); his grandchildren, Michael LaFond (Avery) and Amber LaFond; his sister, Joanne Register; his brother, Wayne Hammock; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Olin Hammock (Sally); his mother, Dorothy Hammock; his son, Michael Lavell Hamock Jr.; and his sister, Christine Reynolds.
Michael will be remembered for his strong work ethic and bold personality, as well as his hard exterior but loving heart.
