

Murphy Lee “Shaft” Maxie Jr., age 70, resident of Columbus, died on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Midtown Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled at 2:00pm in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Columbus, on Saturday, October 11, 2014 with Bishop Tony Thomas and Apostle Beverly Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 10, 2014 from 5:00-7:00pm at the funeral home. Mr. Maxie’s final resting place will be at Jerusalem Cemetery in Many, Louisiana.
Mr. Maxie, son of the late Murphy Lee Maxie Sr. and Anna Bell Sweet Maxie, was born on April 6, 1944 in Many, Louisiana. Receiving Christ at a young age, he attended New Home Baptist Church in Many, LA. Mr. Maxie was a Truck Driver for many years where he worked for Nichols Dry Goods Warehouse. He cherished his family and the time he was able to spend with them; he loved family gatherings, was very dedicated to all ten grandchildren, and would never miss a phone call from his brothers and sisters. Mr. Maxie was a very sporty man and was never considered a stranger to those he met. He loved his sports and cowboy movies and liked to go on walks when time allowed. Mr. Maxie was also a member and affiliated with the Masons lodge in Louisiana when he lived there.
Other than his parents, Mr. Maxie was preceded in death by his mother who raised him as a child, Earlie Mae Maxie; brothers, Harvest Lee Maxie, and Robert McGraw. He is survived by four daughters, Rhonda Ford-Davis (Willie), Shonne Maxie, Angeline Maxie, Keyontia Maxie; former wife and friend, Doris Tenner (Tommy); ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brother, Jacob Maxie (Linda) and sister Doris Harrison of Many, LA.; sisters, Dorthy Willison, Bettye Williams, Gertrude Sommers, and Elaine Williams of Dallas, TX.; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Murrell of Natchitoches, LA., and Belinda Maxie of Houston, TX.; aunts, Zena Lilly, Glan Maxie; uncle, C.I. Maxie of Many, LA.; god sister, Constance Hollis of Many, LA.; and several nieces and nephews.
