Myrtle McKinney Mayo March 27, 1921 - September 13, 2010 COLUMBUS, GA— Myrtle McKinney Mayo 89, died Monday September 13, 2010. Mrs. Mayo was born March 27, 1921 in Dale County, Alabama, the daughter of James B. and U. Dora Lavender McKinney. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday September 17, 2010 in the Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, Georgia 31907. Burial will follow in Parkhill cemetery. Reverend Larry Rollins will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Mayo received her nurses training at Frasier-Ellis Hospital in Dothan, Alabama and later attended the University of Arkansas. She came to Columbus in 1946 to visit her sister, met the love of her life who was visiting his sister across the street. They married and made Columbus their home. Mrs. Mayo worked at many area hospitals, including the old Bush Hospital, Cobb and St. Francis. She was a nursing instructor at St. Francis School of Nursing until the school closed. She later retired as the nurse administrator at Children's Medical Services at the Muscogee County Health Department. After her retirement she continued her calling as a nurse by ministering to sick friends and members of her church for many, many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother, Lula McKinney, her sisters, Izola Wilson and Reba Barnes, and her beloved husband of 57 years, Loyd A. Mayo. Survivors include her sons Don Mayo (Lauri) of Grayson, Georgia and Bill Mayo (Mary) of Zirconia, NC; daughters, Carol Moss (Will) of Temple, Georgia and Myra Young (Vic) of Columbus, Georgia' 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild. The family would like to thank all the staff of Franciscan Woods, Parkwood Health Care and Vista Care Hospice for there love and care they gave Mrs. Mayo. Flowers will be appreciated and memorials may be made to Vista Care Hospice, Phenix City, Alabama or to St. Peter United Methodist church Building fund.
