Noemi Castellanos

Noemi Castellanos, 76, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Gentiva Hospice in Columbus after a long and brave battle against breast cancer. She was born and grew up in Camuy, Puerto Rico. Noemi married Jose in 1955 and they were happily married for 58 years. She retired from South Columbus Elementary School in 2000, after nearly 20 years of service. Noemi faithfully served her Lord for more than 40 years at Fairview Baptist Church where she was a member of the Friendship Class, she was actively involved in children's ministries, and sang beautifully in the church choir. Noemi was an avid Braves fan and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday September 3, 2013 with Reverend David Rathel, Reverend Tommy Green and Reverend Tom Oversby officiating. Burial will follow at 12:30 in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, AL. Visitation will be held at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Rd. Columbus, GA from 6-8 p.m. on Monday September 2, 2013.

Noemi is survived by her husband Jose, and their children; Jose Castellanos, Jr., Carlos Castellanos (Linda) of Silver Creek, GA, Ivette Hutchins (Brent), Tito Castellanos, and Sonia Castellanos. They have ten grandchildren: Melissa Castellanos, Vanessa Rusch, Justin Rusch, Alex Castelllanos (Grace), Philomena Colley (Dewayne), David Hutchins, Joseph Castellanos, Julie Hutchins, Austin Castellanos, and Andrew Hutchins, and 11 precious great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters and brothers: Aida Estrella (Juaquin) of Pembroke Pine, FL; Carmen Nisenson (Paul) of Bay Shore, NY; Nilda Castellanos (Jesus) of Tampa, FL; Felipe Lopez (Ivette Nieves) of Camuy, PR; Juan Lopez (Nilly) of Camuy, PR. and many nieces and nephews.

Noemi was preceded in death by her parents, Domingo and Aurea Lopez, and daughter-in-law, Anna Marie Castellanos.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the John B. Amos Chancer Center.
