Olin Cleveland “Spanky” Norman, beloved father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on October 7, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on March 31, 1943, in Midland, Georgia, Olin’s life was a remarkable journey marked by service, dedication, and kindness that touched everyone who knew him.
A visitation will be held on October 15, 2025, from 10:00 am to 10:50 am at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, located at 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907. The funeral service will follow on the same day, October 15, 2025, from 11:00 am, also at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary.
Born in Midland, Georgia, Olin developed a strong sense of community and purpose from an early age. He answered his country’s call by serving in the United States Marine Corps for six and a half years, where he demonstrated courage and resilience. His bravery in the line of duty was recognized with the awarding of the Purple Heart, a testament to his sacrifice and commitment.
Following his military service, Olin dedicated himself to the education and mentorship of others. For 35 years, he taught welding at Columbus Technical College and West Georgia Technical College, shaping countless lives and careers through his patience, expertise, and unwavering support. His impact as an instructor extended far beyond the classroom, as he inspired his students with both technical skill and life lessons.
Olin’s zest for life was evident in his many passions. A devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs Football, he rarely missed a game, cheering on his teams with enthusiasm. He also found joy and serenity in the outdoors, spending cherished hours hunting and fishing. Those who knew him best will remember his generous spirit, infectious laughter, and the warmth he shared so freely with family, friends, and neighbors.
Olin was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 64 years, Margaret Ann Norman; his sisters Patricia Napier, Janice Slaughter, Lois Lewis Collins, and Barbara Anne Miehlke; and his brothers Charles Cotton, Jack Cotton, and George Cotton. He is survived by his devoted son, Olin Norman (April), and his brother, Donald Norman.
