Philip Thomas Schley, Jr.

Philip Thomas Schley September 14, 2010 COLUMBUS, GA— Philip Thomas Schley, Jr., of Columbus died Tuesday, September 14, 2010.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, September 16, 2010 at Trinity Episcopal Church with The Very Reverend Rich Martindale officiating according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus.

Born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, Mr. Schley graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, and then matriculated at the United States Military Academy at West Point for two years. He changed his career path and attended the University of Georgia to complete his undergraduate studies. He then received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Georgia. Mr. Schley practiced law in Atlanta, for a time, but realized that when he won litigated cases, he felt sorry for the opposing side. This reaction was typical of him: he was a kind, tender-hearted, and compassionate man. He became a mathematics teacher and was teaching at Northside High School at the time of his death. He found wonderful pleasure in being able to take a child who was afraid of mathematics and to turn that child around to the point of comprehension and appreciation. Mr. Schley was fond of hunting, fishing, and fellowship on the family's farm on River Road. He was also a member of the Country Club of Columbus and the Big Eddy Club. Mr. Schley attained the rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 14. He also was a member of the State Bar of Georgia.

He is survived by his wife Jarrell Palmer Schley, and two daughters, Nancy Jarrell Hardaway Schley and Frances Vivian Schley, whom he adored. In addition to his wife and daughters, he is survived by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Philip Thomas Schley; sisters, Georgia Schley Ritchie and Margot Schley Smallman, and brother, Dr. Robert Sommerville Schley; nieces India Schley-Ritchie and Tallulah Schley-Ritchie; nephews, Addison Schley-Ritchie, Ernest Smallman, and Edward Schley Smallman; his mother-in-law, Mrs. J. Daniel Palmer, and sister-in-law, Jennings Adams DeWitt Palmer.

The family will receive guests at St. Elmo on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, from 5:30 pm until 7:30 PM.

Phillip was a great friend and someone who will be sorely missed. He always had something nice to say about everyone he met. It is a shame his life has been cut short as he had so much to offer. I will miss him and pray for Georgia and his family. Columbus, UGA and the world has lost a very good man.

Dear Mr. Schley,
I'll never forget all the time I had in your class. You were by far my toughest teacher but also one of my favorites. You challenged me to do better and I'll never forget how much i learned in your class. You were tough but fair. I'm so happy i had you as my Algebra 2 teacher last year and i'll be sure to have a great senior year in your memory. Unitl than I hope you teach those angels in heaven everything you know about graphing and long division. Me and the rest of your "heathens" will never forget you!

I only knew Philip for one summer during the early 80's, but I remember the friendliness and easy manner he had. He was as good of a guy as I've ever known.
