Raford was born on September 13, 1948, in Buena Vista, Georgia, to the late Eugene Perry and Louise Thomas. Though born in the South, he was raised in Detroit, Michigan, where he spent his formative years and developed the strength, resilience, and bold spirit that carried him through life.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned multiple honors, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, in recognition of his bravery and unwavering dedication.
Raford was a man of few words but deep presence. Though life took many turns, he returned later in life and was cared for with love and grace by his daughter during his final season. Their relationship, though complex, found healing in simple moments including their shared tradition of saluting each other at the door as a quiet yet powerful expression of love and mutual respect.
He had a deep love for music, often spending hours letting the rhythm fill the room. Those who knew him best also remember how much he loved to dance a joyful part of him that never faded.
Raford is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene Perry and Louise Thomas, as well as his brothers Alfred Perry and Eugene Perry Jr.
He is survived by his children:
Tiffany Leonard Hall (husband Antonio Hall), Ebony Hicks, Raford Perry Jr., Demetrius Leonard, Rayshawnda Hicks, and Raychatta Davis.
He is also survived by his brothers: Tony Perry, Jeffrey Perry, Raynard Perry (wife Kafi Perry), Lester Perry; and his sisters: Melvine Perry, Jackie Perry, and Betty Crosby.
He leaves behind a host of grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will continue to carry his memory forward.
