Ramon was born on July 28, 1933, in Columbus, Georgia to LaVerne and Ellis Long. He graduated from Jordan Vocational High School in 1951. Ramon joined the United States Navy after graduation and proudly served his country as a United States Navy Airman. He is a Korean War Veteran who proudly and honorably served his country. He is a true patriot in every sense of the word! As Ramon would say, he loved only two women in his life, Betty Ann Williams Long of Talbot County to whom he was married for 22 years and Shirley Hopkins Long to whom he was married for 41 years. A follower of Christ, Ramon was a former member of Sherwood Methodist Church for many years. He is a current member of Living Grace Church in Columbus, Georgia where he enjoyed attending Sunday School, pitching in to help whenever possible and making everyone feel welcome. After his time in the military, Ramon became a member of the Sheet Metal Worker’s Union Local 85 out of Atlanta. This afforded him the opportunity to work all over the country during his professional career. In October of 2016, the Sheet Metal Worker’s Union presented a plaque honoring 60 years of dedication and service to Local Union No. 85.
Ramon lived a long life humbly and gave all of his love to his family, friends and to his country. He provided insight into all life’s hardships and laughed at the small joys and humors in life. Most people will remember him for the wisdom that he passed along to everyone that he encountered and that he was always there to help anyone whenever he was needed. He was an avid Historian who loved to travel and collect knowledge about his ancestors and family. Ramon was President of the Long family reunion for decades that was held each year in July. This reunion had a long history, spanning close to 100 years in the Gum Branch Georgia area near Savannah, on land his Great Great Grandfather donated to the church.
