Richard James “Swede” Hansen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Helen Grimes Hansen and Clarence Hansen. His mother was married to James Fisher after his father, Clarence died when Richard was a young boy. Richard faithfully served his country in the United States Army when he was drafted after high school. His Army duties brought him to Fort Benning, Georgia where he met the love of his life, Betty J. Franklin.
Together they made the Columbus, Georgia area their home. Then later the Harris County, Georgia area their home. Richard worked as the Asphalt Plant Foreman beginning with Wright Contracting Co. in the mid 1960’s and their future companies for 41 years.
Richard “Swede” was the “go-to-man” to be by your side, he worked hard on the job, and at any task, he tackled. He always loved working on projects of any kind with his son-in-law, Randy. He was a man of many talents, if you were in need of assistance.
After retirement, he and Betty enjoyed traveling to Australia to visit his brother and his family. Most important in life for Richard was his family, especially his wife Betty, she was his universe. Spending time with his granddaughters and great-grandchildren were such special times to him as well as finding out “What was on the agenda” each day with his daughter Lynn. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and especially loved him.
His beloved wife, Betty Franklin Hansen; his parents, Clarence Hansen, Helen and James Fisher; and his brother Francis Xavier “Babe” Hansen preceded him in death.
He leaves his loving memory to be cherished by his daughter, Lynn (Randy) Kelly; his granddaughters: Courtney Kelly (Michael Woods) and Lauren (Yang) Hsu; his great grandchildren: Madison Woods and Nolan Hsu; and his loving nieces and nephews here and in Australia, as well as cousins in Philadelphia, PA.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Humane Society of Harris County 3938 Barnes Mill Rd, Hamilton, GA 31811.
