Robert M. Gordy, Sr., age 91, of Columbus, GA died September 22, 2019. Robert was born on February 25, 1928 in Columbus, GA the son of James Colbert Gordy, Sr. And Nannie Bray Gordy. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Eberhardt Gordy, and their children Cathy G. Storey (John), Robert M. Gordy, Jr. (Susan), and Richard M. Gordy (Kelly), and grandchildren Jackson Gordy, Will Gordy (fiancé Shannon Hardy), and Sarah Gordy. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James C. Gordy, Jr., and grandson Chad Storey.
He was a 1947 graduate of Central High School, Phenix City, AL and several Naval Training schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1948 and served 4 years. He served aboard the USS McKean (DD - 784) during the Korean War as a Radarman 2nd class. Involvement consisted of shore bombardment, anti-submarine warfare, and patrol duties. Medals include China Service, Korean Service, and Korean War Service. He later served on the USS McCord (DD - 534) until his honorable discharge in 1952.
After the service he worked briefly at Strickland Motors and Interstate Insurance before going to work in Civil Service. He worked at Fort Benning in the Corp of Engineers then Housing Administration from 1956 - 1984. During this time he served as Housing Management Officer in Nurnburg, Germany, then returned to Fort Benning until his retirement. After retirement from Civil Service, he worked at Total System Services for 8 years, then retired from there.
He was a faithful member of Gentian Baptist, Mt. Zion Baptist, Protestant Chapel- Germany, Bethesda Baptist- Ellerslie, GA, and most recently Wynbrook Baptist. He was an ordained deacon.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 2:00 pm in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907 with Reverend Dr. Kevin Calhoun officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will follow in the Veterans Garden of Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests dentations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Wynnbrook Baptist Church in honor of Robert Gordy.
