Bob was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to the late Mae Tolson and the Col. (Ret.) Robert Simeon Moore, Sr. He was the eldest of six children, and because his father was a career army officer, he spent his school-age years in North Carolina, Kansas, Georgia and Germany, Formosa (now Taiwan) and France. Bob attended Clemson University on an ROTC scholarship and graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He received his commission as a Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers and was assigned to the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia. Shortly after meeting and marrying the love of his life, Bob left the Army in 1973 to become a branch manager at Charter Federal Savings and Loan Association in nearby West Point, Georgia, where he discovered his professional vocation.
During the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, Bob became a pioneering, practical intellect who helped drive the modernization of thrift banking in the southeastern United States. He will be remembered as a man deeply committed to enabling the development of the people around him – whether guiding first time homebuyers as a mortgage loan officer, looking after the livelihoods of hundreds of employees as CEO of a regional bank, or simply being an involved community member. He was, in fact, named the West Point Jaycees’ “Young Man of the Year” in 1979, and he went on to serve in executive leadership roles for a variety of civic organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Club, Junior Achievement, and Boy Scouts of America. He concluded his career as a partner at a global investment management firm, from which he retired in 2001.
Bob was a committed family man and loving father above all else, and he had smiling eyes for his children and grandchildren even after words failed him. He is survived by Susan Philips Moore, his wife of 45 years; their three children, Robert Simeon Moore III, (Suzanne), Allison Moore Builder (Thomas), and David Philips Moore (Megan); six grandchildren, Whitney Louise Moore, Garratt West Builder, Larkin Grace Moore, Lindsay Duffee Builder, James Duffee Moore, and Magnolia Bugbee Moore; his brother Boyce Moore (Beverly); his sister Diana Moore Mann (Stacy); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In his latter years, Bob lived at the William Breman Jewish Home. The family is grateful for the exceptional care that he received from the WBJH staff and especially for Marie Louis, his devoted daily caregiver.
Family and Friends are invited to commemorate Bob in the chapel at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Atlanta on Tuesday, June 26, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to either: Emory Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, 1762 Clifton Rd, NE, Suite 1400, Atlanta, GA 30322; or William Breman Jewish Home, Attention: Development, 3150 Howell Mill Rd NW, Atlanta, GA 30327.
