Robert "Willie" W. Wood Jr.

February 2, 1947July 27, 2020

Robert W (Willie) Wood, Jr. was born February 2, 1947 in Atlanta, Georgia, son of the late Mary L. Wood and Robert W. Wood, Sr.

Willie served six years in the Georgia National Guard, was a 1965 Graduate of Columbus High School, and he graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Construction Science. As a builder and developer, his company, R. W. Wood Construction Co., was highly respected in the local home building community. He was a past president of the Columbus Home Builders Association.

Willie loved nothing more than spending an afternoon with his friends at Green Island Country Club playing Gin. He was such a social person, a true and loyal friend. He was a golf enthusiast, at one time an avid hunter, and loved fishing.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Deborah Wood; his sister and brother-in-law, Karen and John LaChance; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Joy Jackson; his friends and work associates, Robert Gnann, for almost 50 years, and Susan Marsh, for over 41 years; his neighbor and friend, Harriett Elkins. Every time she cooks on the grill, she will remember adding a little extra chicken or ribs for Willie. Cousins and friends too numerous to mention.

Deborah wishes to thank all the Heroes on 8 Main ICU at Piedmont Regional Midtown, Doctors and Nurses, for their extraordinary care of her husband.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Columbus Hospice, Paws, or St. Jude.

Graveside services will be at Parkhill Cemetery 10:00am on Friday, July 31st. The public is invited to attend but must adhere to the Covid rules of social distancing and wearing a mask. There will not be visitation before or after the service.

The family would like for friends to please leave online condolences in lieu of the family having a guest register book. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.shcolumbus.com. Striffler-Hamby is entrusted with the arrangements.

We are so sorry to lose such a good friend who was like family to us.
Willie was always so supportive of not only us (Tommy & Siblings) growing up, but of our children when they had fundraisers at school, graduations etc. We will never forget him or his generosity.
Rest in Peace Willie.

Willie was a friend & neighbor in Lindsay Creek Park. We attended Ridgon Road School, then Columbus High School as friends. While living in Lindsay Creek Park, Willie & so many other friends would all gather together for a lot of fun times! I last saw Willie 5 years ago when visiting Columbus & it was like old times, talking & laughing & remembering our " old times". He was a friend with a fun personality. He will be missed!
M:y condolences to his wife & family!

We came to the Sweet service today and I had my hair fixed as Sarah Palin in honor of him, as he always said with my hair up I look like her. We will miss his sweet sense of humor.
Jerry will miss seeing him at Green Island. May God comfort you and give you grace during this time.

I just want to again pay my respects to someone who had such a positive impact on my life, as well as the life of my family. He was a shining example of what happens when you combine entrepreneurship and generosity. He viewed the people who helped him succeed as family, and he treated them accordingly. He didn’t have to do it, which is what made it so special, good, and decent. He will be missed.
