Shirley Whitten

Shirley Whitten, 87, was born on November 22, 1938, and passed away on July 21, 2026. She will be remembered as a beloved presence in the lives of those who knew her, and her absence will be felt deeply by family and friends.

Over the years, Shirley built her life through steady work and determination, including owning her own Cleaning Service—an endeavor that reflected her independence and the pride she took in providing for herself and her family.

Shirley found joy in simple, meaningful pleasures. She loved to play bingo and was a previous member of the FOP, American Legion and VFW. She also loved to cook and was known for making the best pound cake ever. A devoted Atlanta Braves fan, she knew all their names and probably their stats, following the team with unwavering enthusiasm. Before she became unable to do so, she felt compassionate about sitting with the elderly, offering her time and presence in a way that spoke quietly of care and respect. She dearly loved her dog Mandy—so much so that the family would joke she loved her dog more than her children—yet it was always clear that she certainly loved her family.

Shirley is survived by Linda DeSpain, DeWaine Backman (Renee), Jerry Backman (Kathy), Shelia Alexander, grandchildren, Niki Gallant, Daralyn Ivey (Ryan), CJ Davis (Kayla), Trey Backman, Melissa Backman, Trish Backman, Danielle Holt, multiple great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Jeffrey Whitten, son, Carlton Davis, mother, Ethel Autry, and father, Edward Autry.
