Mableton, Georgia- Velma Averett Haines, age 103, former resident of Columbus and current resident of Mableton, GA, died on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at her residence. Graveside services are scheduled at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road, Columbus on Saturday, November 17, 2012, 2 p.m., with Rev. Paul Applebee officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service on Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 11:30 a.m. till 1: 30 p.m.
Mrs. Haines, daughter of the late Henry Mitchell Averett and Lenora Blanche Rogers Averett, was born August 10, 1909 in Marion County, GA. She was a homemaker and member of the Gentian Homemakers. Mrs. Haines was a lifelong active member and the oldest member of Central Christian Church. She was also an avid gardener and well known for her excellent southern cooking.
Mrs. Haines was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd B. Haines; daughter, Patricia Ellis; and granddaughter, Jan Ellis. She is survived by one daughter, Pam Haines Armes and her husband Bill of Richmond, VA; one son, Hal Haines and his wife Kathie of Mableton, GA; seven grandchildren, Steve Ellis and his wife Jan, Beth Ellis Steele and her husband Ricky, Jason Armes, Christopher Armes, Jessica Armes, Melissa Haines, and David Haines; five great-grandchildren, Stacy Smith and her husband Chris, Mark Ellis and his wife Courtney, Everett Steele and his wife Allison, Andrew Steele and his wife Vivian, and Rebecca Steele; five great-great grandchildren; Brennen Smith, Blakely Smith, Avery Ellis, Steven Ellis, and Sophia Steele; other relatives and friends.
