

Graveside services will be at 11AM on Friday, November 4, 2011 at Riverdale Cemetery with Dr. Jimmy Elder officiating. The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, November 3rd from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Striffler Hamby Mortuary on Macon Road.
Walter was born January 27, 1927 at home on 3rd Avenue. He was the only son of Walter and Irene Haywood and brother of Alice Virginia, Margaret, Barbara, Irene, Augusta, Ruth and Jane. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1944 and served in the US Navy 1945 -1946 and was one of the first to be trained to use radar to guide pilots in landing.
He pledged Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at the University of North Carolina and remained a died in the wool Tar Heel all his life. He returned to Columbus and married Betty Stevens in 1951. After working in a variety of jobs he found his permanent career as an insurance adjuster, first for Brewer Adjustment Company and then a firm bearing his own name. He retired in 1989.
In addition to a life full of friendships in Columbus, Walter made friends wherever he went, including lots of northern friends on their annual trip to Betty’s family’s cottage on Great Diamond Island, Portland, ME.
Other than his parents he is preceded in death by his sisters Alice Virginia Haywood, Margaret Haywood, and Irene Holland of Columbus, and Barbara Sharpe of Miami.
Walter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Stevens Haywood, a daughter, Anne Haywood of Plant City, Florida; son Steven Haywood of Gulf Breeze, FL (Wendy); son Jim Haywood of Tucker, GA (Edna); three grandchildren, Ryan Haywood (Laurie) of Austin, TX; Jennifer Haywood Boner (Ross) of Huntersville, NC; and Michael Haywood of Tucker, GA and two great grandchildren, Eli Haywood of Austin and Mary Ansleigh Boner of Huntersville, NC; three sisters Ruth Evert of Columbus, Augusta Ethington of Tucker, GA, and Jane Grogan of Columbus; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many many friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to a charity of your choice.
