William Carter Prather passed away peacefully, at his home, on Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Funeral services are scheduled at the Mill Room of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Monday, May 18, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Prather was born in Columbus, Georgia to Mr. James Carter Prather and Helen Allen Prather. He grew up on his family’s farm, in Seale, AL with his three sisters. He attended Chavalla High School, in Russell County, where he played football and was known as “The Wall”. He then went off to school at Tennessee Wesleyan College, in Athens, TN, and got his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He came back to Columbus to help run his father’s printing business Service, Printing and Stamp, Inc., which he eventually took over. He met his former wife, Jeanie Vaughn Prather (deceased), while running the shop, in 1982. They were married for 17 years, and had 3 children. He was a beloved father and friend. He was always quick with a joke or a story. Anyone who knew Mr. Prather knew he was an avid Braves Baseball fan. He rarely missed a game, but preferred to hear it on the radio!
He is preceded in death by his former wife Jeanie Vaughn Prather, and his sister Susan Lubovick. He is survived by his three children Kathleen Hung (Jeff), Matthew Prather (Sarah Kate), Amy Prather, and one grandchild Carter Hung (Kathleen), his sisters Linda Roberts (Warren), and Elizabeth Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to especially thank the staff at Morningside Assisted Living, in Columbus for taking such great care of their father these past few years. Also, thanks to Hospice Advantage for their care and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
