

Born January 30, 1939, in Bicknell, Indiana, Alan was the son of Heber and M. Louise (Biggs) Conrad. He was a proud graduate of Vincennes University and Indiana State University, later earning his master’s degree from Indiana University.
Alan dedicated his life to education, beginning his career as a math teacher at Central Junior High in Columbus, where he later served as a guidance counselor until his retirement in 1997. During his tenure, he also coached several sports, including track and basketball, and played an active role in the school community. His service to education extended beyond the classroom as he served on the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation (BCSC) school board. Even after retirement, Alan remained committed to students, returning as a substitute teacher and serving as an assistant basketball coach at Smith Elementary.
Alan married Leah Heidenreich on December 22, 1962, in Westphalia, Indiana. They shared over 50 years of marriage before her passing in July 2013. In January 2016, he married Marilyn Etnire, and the couple made their home in Bloomington. Marilyn survives.
He is also survived by his loving family: daughters Camela (Stephan) Ashendorf and Alysa Conrad, both of Columbus; grandchildren Abigayle (Cameron) Stone, Kristina (Matt) Davis, Aaron (Megan) Sprong, all of Columbus, and Connor Gossett of Pittsburgh, PA; and great-grandchildren Opal Stone, Natalee Davis, Baylee Davis, Hadlee Davis, Ellie Sprong, and Judah Sprong. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Ann (Jeff) Lew of West Lafayette; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his first wife, Alan was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kathleen Conrad.
A longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Alan will be remembered for his deep faith, devotion to education, and love of family. He was an avid Indiana University sports fan, especially passionate about IU basketball. He also had a lifelong enthusiasm for cars and a special fondness for his many pet dogs over the years.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025, at Myers-Reed Chapel with Pastor Randy Burton officiating. Inurnment will take place at Garland Brook Cemetery at a later date. Friends are welcome to gather with the family two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
Alan's legacy lives on in the lives of the many students, athletes, and colleagues he influenced, and in the hearts of his family and friends.
