Born October 8, 1980, in Vincennes, Indiana, Brent grew up with a curious mind, a steady nature, and a gift for fixing just about anything. He was the person people relied on, quietly capable, patient, and always willing to help.
Brent graduated from Lawrenceville (IL) High School in 1999 and went on to earn both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Olney Central College and Southern Illinois University. He built a 25-year career with Cummins, where he most recently served as Product Quality Director. To his coworkers, he was a trusted leader and a genuine friend, dependable, thoughtful, and steady under pressure.
He enjoyed being outdoors and staying active. Whether he was boating, riding four-wheelers, working on cars, or tackling a project around the house, Brent approached everything with enthusiasm and skill. His faith was important to him, and he was a committed member of The Ridge Church.
More than anything, Brent loved his family. He was a devoted husband and father, always present, always supportive, and always cheering on his children. His love for Nicole, Amy, and Levi was the center of his life, and he made sure they felt it every day.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, George and Rayburne Engel; and his maternal grandparents, Carl and Kathleen Fye.
Brent is survived by his wife of 20 years, Nicole L. Engel of Hope; his children, Amy and Levi Engel of Hope; his parents, Allan G. and Glenna J. Engel of Lawrenceville, IL; and his brother, Ryan (Landon Testa) Engel of St. Louis, MO. He is also survived by his parents-in-law, Bill and Doris Beltz of Lawrenceville, IL; his sister-in-law, Dawn (Harrison) Bradberry of Plainfield, IN; his brother-in-law, Tory (Katie) Beltz of Lawrenceville, IL; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who cared deeply for him.
Visitation will be held from 4–8 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Myers-Reed Chapel, 3729 25th Street, Columbus, IN, with a brief funeral service beginning at 7:30 p.m. A Celebration of Brent’s Life will be announced at a later date.
