Aunt Helen, Sarah, Mark and all: I am so very sorry for your loss. I was very glad to hear, though, that until only very recently Don was still very sharp and continued his interest, passion and energy for so many things; a true Renaissance Man.
There is so much good I remember, but with Thanksgiving approaching I am especially reminded of the joyous family gatherings at Don & Helen's for Thanksgiving, it was always such a great time that I remember fondly.
I am sorry it was impossible for me to travel this last week, but glad my parents and sister could all be there.
You are all in my prayers and thoughts.

Although it has been many years since I last saw Uncle Don and Aunt Helen, I've never forgotten how much fun it was visiting them as a child. Don was funny and kind and I always felt welcome and right at home at their house by the lake. Very fond memories indeed.

My condolences to Helen and family. I work at Columbus Diagnostic Imaging, and will miss seeing Donald there as a patient. You are both such a sweet couple! Take care.

I worked closely in a number of capacities with Don in the 60s and 70s. There is no job title or description that can define his place in the Finance, Accounting, and Planning functions of Cummins during its explosive growth and formative years. He was the information source, glue and keeper of the ethics for many years when others had loftier titles. We all depended on the fact  that he knew whatever was needed he would provide the information and organize the tasks. Don had one "flaw", he was so modest and self-effacing  that he was loath to express strong opinions. The result was that he provided the real groundwork while the rest of us succeeded greatly because of his expertise. During my years at Cummins I probably spent more face time with Don than anyone else and I can tell you that his influence on me was as great or greater that that of many other Cummins superstars.
So, here's my salute to a fine man who left his mark in a benefical way on
 a lot of us. My sympathy to his wife and descendants and may they  pass on his traits.

To the family of Don Mellencamp.

This note is due to the fact that Pat and I will be away from Columbus on Thursday .  I have had the privilege of knowing and working with Don beginning the day I joined Cummins in 1956. Don and I both reported to Waldo Harrison. 
Don's office and my desk were in close proximity. I know no one with more dedicated drive than Don.  He would always find the needed answers relating to the company records,and I especially admired his ability to come up with correct concise explanations that I could understand.  

As a professional he was without peer.  
Cummins can be proud of its heritage due in great measure to the contributions of devoted and honest folks like our friend Don Mellencamp.

As a neighbor and colleague it was always enjoyable to discuss our community and the benefits of both the culture and the lifestyle of the mid-west  which he loved.  It has been a privilege and an honor to have known Don and his lovely wife Helen.  He is missed!

At this time of loss, may God be generous in bestowing his grace on you and your entire family.
