

Mr. Young was born in Ft. Wayne, IN. on December 06, 1940 the son of the late William Morrison and Elizabeth Virginia Kelty Young.
He married Priscilla L. Eastridge in Auburn, IN. on August 03, 1968 and she survives.
Mr. Young retired in 2005 from Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation where he was a chemistry teacher at Columbus East High School.
Mr. Young was a 1959 graduate of South Side High School in Ft. Wayne, IN. and continued his education at Purdue University where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in chemistry.
He received several awards including the Master Demonstrator for Chemistry Teachers in Indiana, the Outstanding Chemistry Teaching Award from Sigma Xi at Indiana University, the Excellence in Teaching Award - IUPUC, the Lilly Education Outreach Teacher Grant – Eli Lilly, the All USA Teacher Team – sixty teachers in the U.S. selected by “USA Today” for outstanding teaching. He was the recipient of the educational grant “Inspiring Students to Expand their Educational Horizons” – Colleges of Indiana and Lilly Endowment. He was also the recipient of the Edna V. Folger Outstanding Teacher Award – Arvin Meritor Trust Fund. Mr. Young was selected by the Indiana Section of the American Chemical Society as the Chemistry Instructor of the year for the state of Indiana.
Mr. Young was the head of the chemistry department at IUPUC where he was Lecture Emeritus and at retirement he was named the Distinguished Hoosier by Governor Mitch Daniels.
Victor Fields created a scholarship for the top senior chemistry student at Columbus East High School in honor of Jack Young.
Mr. Young was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Columbus, IN., the Indiana State Teachers Retirement Association and the Indiana Alliance of Chemistry Teachers.
The funeral service celebrating the life of Mr. Young will be conducted at 11:00 am Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at Asbury United Methodist Church with Pastor Dave Blystone officiating.
Calling hours will be from 4:00 – 8:00 pm, Monday at Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th St. and from 10:00 am until the time of the service on Tuesday at the church.
Burial will be in the Garland Brook Cemetery.

Along with his wife of 44 years, Mr. Young is also survived by two daughters, Shalan Kathleen (Brad) Baker of Royal Center, IN. and Gretchen Elaine (Gabe) Thomas of Columbus, IN.; a brother, Michael (Barbara) Young of Indianapolis, IN. and five grandchildren, Macee Robin and Jackson Davis Baker both of Royal Center, IN. and Jacob Patrick, Riley Gabriel and Caleb Alexander Thomas all of Columbus, IN.
