

Jean was born in Houston, Texas, March 2, 1920, the daughter of Paul H. and Adele R. McCaslin Stambaugh.
She married Marshall O. Prather on September 26, 1943 in Columbus. He preceded her in death on August 13, 1994.
She was a 1941 graduate McMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill.
Jean retired from The Republic in 1983 as the Women’s Editor.
She was a charter member of North Christian Church and P.E.O. Sisterhood BM Chapter. She was also a member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Columbus Culture Club and a former member of Zonta and the Bartholomew County Historical Society.
She was the founder of the Woman of the Year Award in Columbus and authored, “The History of Bartholomew County, Vol. II.”
Jean is survived by her sons, David M. (Susan) Prather, Richard E. (Jodi) Prather, Douglas P. (Paula) Prather, all of Columbus; a daughter, Sally A. (Steven) Ramsey, of Columbus; a brother, Robert P. Stambaugh of New Hampshire; grandchildren, Ben and Tricia Adams, Kim, Elliott (Jackie), Andrew, Lindsey, Jonathan, Spencer and Michael (Katie) Prather, Angela (Brad) Mc-Carty, and Todd (Nena) and Brian (Grace) Ramsey; 13 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Peg and Dot Stambaugh, both of Columbus.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Susan J. Adams in 2003; and two brothers, Donald W. and David J. Stambaugh.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hathaway-Myers Chapel on Pearl Street with Dr. Lanny Lawler officiating. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from noon until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
