John Saxton “Jack” Kent III, 85, of Taylor Road, Columbus, IN died at 9:10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
Mr. Kent graduated from Farragut Academy in 1944 and received his BS degree in 1950 at the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. He retired in 1990 after 31 years of service with Cummins Engine Company where he had been a marketing and distribution director.
He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church where he had been an active lector, Eucharistic minister to the sick and infirm and member of the Parish Council. He also served in the St. Vincent DePaul Society and was a member of Knights of Columbus.
After retirement from Cummins, he tutored children and was generous to numerous charities. He donated his brain to the IU Medical School Alzheimer’s research project.
Discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1946 as a Seaman 1st Class, he had served on the destroyer the USS Frank Knox (DD742) and was the recipient of the WWII Victory Medal, the American Area Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal with one star.
He enjoyed golf, travel and especially family gatherings. He was highly respected and dearly loved.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Father Jim Kent, OFM Conv., and Father Clem Davis officiating. Military rites will be by the Bartholomew Coounty Color Guard. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street and one hour to the Mass Friday at the church. The Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
In keeping with Jack’s wishes, cremation is planned following the Mass. Private inurnment will be at a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Born in Brockton, Mass., March 12, 1926, Mr. Kent was the son of John S. Kent Jr. and Margaret Mary Agnew Kent. He married Mary Sims April 7, 1951, in Philadelphia.
Survivors include his wife; children, John S. (Laura) Kent IV of Carmel, IN, Father Jim Kent of Mount St. Francis, Julie (Steve) Johnson of Hampton, NH, Bill Kent of Columbus, Rick (Suzanne) Kent of Cincinnati, OH, and Rob (Bev) Kent of Brownsburg, IN; siblings, Peter (Pat) Kent of Long Beach, CA, Phil (Darla) Kent of Las Cruces, NM, and Mike (Judie) Kent of Chatham, MA; grandchildren, Jack Kent V and Patrick, Brian, Alyssa, Peter, Morena, Caroline, Maggie, Greg, Ross, Allison and Grant Kent.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
