Losing a parent is a very hard thing. I know this all to well. I know your father will be missed greatly and that your faith will guide you through this time. You have my deepest sympathy

Mr. Clotfelter delivered a heartfelt eulogy for John's service and to have those beautiful grandchildren lead us in Amazing Grace so early in the ceremony was my first insight to everything being the way that John wanted it carried out.  They seemed somewhat somber yet still proud to do it for him...they behaved so grown-up like that it made it that much more endearing.

When it was announced that both daughters wanted to say something, it displayed that they knew deep down it's how their Dad had wanted it.  How very brave of them and Jana, your sister was correct when she said you had a wonderful way with your words.  I could see in my mind the episodes you described that will forever be in your memory & heart.

Jennifer-I was aware that both of our fathers just couldn't say enough about your beautiful singing and I now can first-handedly agree.  What really took me by surprise was that listening to the recording, I felt strongly that it was your Dad singing with you before Virgil verified the fact and I know just having the recording in your posession has given you something to surely treasure over the years.  It made me want to take the cd I have of my Dad singing and try to figure out how to harmonize with it like Natalie Cole had done.  If I only had a voice anywhere close to yours, I would already be on it!

Linda, once again, you are an amazing woman and when things quiet down and you should feel up to it, you have my phone numbers and I hope you will someday realize how inspirational of a person that you are.      P.S.  I loved the sign when leaving the church lot that read I was now entering the mission zone...I think that's how John lived many parts of his life and I am grateful he took it upon himself to share God's word with me.      jan (again)

I first meet John about five years ago. It doesn't seem like it has been that long ago. It has been an honor getting to know such a wonderful man. Although I will miss you, I know that you are in a better place. All my love and deepest sympathy go out to the family...

What a wonderful photo tribute! John was an amazing man, husband, father, brother, uncle. He gave his all to fight his illness. I am sorry for your family's loss. I remember calling you dad, feeling so loved by a father.  Thank you for those sweet memory!

John was a great person to work with in Agriculture and Rural Development.  It was a pleasure to serve with him as a fellow member of the US Department of Agriculture.  We will all miss his wisdom and caring attitude.

To John's Family--John and I met in the fall of 1959 and lived in the same housing unit at Purdue.  We pledged Alpha Gamma Rho together and shared many wonderful experiences at Purdue.  I was honored to be his best man when he married Joan.  John was a great person and it was my good fortune to have him in my life for over 50 years.  The memories are comforting to me and I hope for you as well.  Millie

Ohhh Linda,
It’s been a long hard road for you both and I am so very sorry for this loss.  I know that John was the center of your life for a long time and when I stopped by last week, you successfully found the words to help me with accepting his time and I found myself then, as well as now, at a loss for any words I could say to make it any easier for you.  Please don’t let anything in the past or that may occur in the future make you doubt yourself.  You are a beautiful, wonderful, caring and strong woman and you were there for John, doing all that you could, even when it wasn’t easy to be. 

Jennifer, I did not get the chance to meet Jana but you sang with my Dad once, there at Miller’s Merry Manor and my Dad told me that you had the voice of an angel.  Your Dad was a good friend to my father in the time that they were residents there together and John also became a friend to me.  After my Dad passed, John encouraged me to come visit with him and I sensed that he wanted to help me through my grieving then.  The  time I did visit with him, he so impressed me with his knowledge of the Bible and his strong faith in God.  I do hope that there is some comfort in that fact for you.  My knowing that is helping give me the push to extend my deepest sympathies to all of the Thompson family.  With love & respect,   Jan Ford
