It is with sorrow yet joy that we announce the passing of our precious mother. Sorrow for the loss of an amazing, beautiful and devoted earthly angel, joy for the knowledge that because of her faith, she has achieved her lifelong goal of being in the arms of her Lord and savior.
Mom was born into the Catholic faith on June 24,1928 to William J. and Ruth T Biesel in Jeffersonville, IN. After graduating high school, she married Herman R. Hutt, Jr. at St. Anthony Catholic Church on July 19, 1947, and over the next 18 years they were blessed with six sons. They moved to Indiana Court in Columbus in 1958 where she called home for 65 years, until age, health and the loss of her husband in 2010 prevented her ability to care for her home alone.
She moved to Greentree at Westwood Senior Living in November, 2022, then to Tiptona Commons on July 29, 2026, when she needed 24-hour care, but her heart remained on Indiana Court until dementia claimed her most cherished memories.
Upon moving to Columbus, the family joined St. Bartholomew Catholic Church where she became a member of the choir, D of I and CRHP. In June 2014 she sang with the choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Then in November 2016, the choir traveled to Rome, Italy where they sang for Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Basilica.
During her wonderful life she raised her six boys while working as a waitress at the Holiday Inn restaurant and retired as a senior nurse aid from Bartholomew County Hospital.
Always busy and rarely idle, mom attended mass several times each week and found time to make many beautiful works with her hands. She was prolific in calligraphy, won blue ribbons with her crocheted items, pieced heart and body warming quilts, created amazing oils paintings, did embroidery, made monogramed gifts on her serger and stitched many items of her wardrobe. She worked in a garden each summer that kept her family and neighbors in tomatoes and green beans with enough to process for winter enjoyment. Mom loved cherry pie, so it was fitting that she had a cherry tree in the back yard, as well as an apple tree, blackberries and grape vine, all of which were made into some very tasty desserts.
A petite lady in stature, she accomplished a lot with the life God gave her. There were some ups and downs, but she stayed true to her faith and seldom complained. Her best works and closest to her heart were her religion and raising her boys.
When she did rest, she would sit on her back patio where she would pray the rosary, reflect on the day and truly enjoyed watching another of Gods little miracles, “the Hummingbirds”.
Survivors include her loving children, Charles of Columbus, IN. Michael (XYZondra) of Seymour, IN, Edward (Tammy) of Plant City, FL, Paul (Nancy) or Scipio, IN, John (Kaitlyn) of Henderson, NV, Joseph (Lisa) of Columbus, IN; 12 grandchildren, Duwayne, Ben, David, Matthew, Robert, Ryan, and Meaghan Hutt, Aubrey Cook, Nathan Hall, Alizabeth Hicks, Ken Acton, and Tish Dean. Also surviving are 33 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ruth; brothers, Joseph and William; husband, Herman, Jr.; grandson, Tim Acton; niece, Terrie; daughters-in-law, Pat and Tammy; mother-In-Law, Bertha; father-in-Law, Herman, Sr.; and sisters-in-law, Helen and Rita.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church on Thursday, September 10, 2026. Visitation will be from 10:30 am to 11:30am with mass beginning at 11:30 am. She will be laid to rest with her Husband at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, IN.
