Mamaw was always such an integral part of my life. She was someone I knew would always be supportive of me with unconditional love. She was the epitome of what a grandmother should be. She never forgot a birthday or holiday. She used them as times to celebrate family and express how deeply she loved us. When my girls were born, she sent them care packages for every holiday. They always included beautiful clothes from a local shop, books and don't forget the candy and cookie treats! Everything was wrapped in separate boxes and the girls were entertained for hours when a "Mamaw Box" would arrive from Indiana. I will always cherish the memories of her yearly visits and our 4 generations photos we made sure to take with Mamaw, my mom, myself and my girls. I was truly blessed to have her in my life for so long and to be able to have her in the lives of my children. I love you.

Aunt Vernita enriched all of our lives simply with her beautiful smile and simple acts of kindness. She introduced me to a world beyond the confines of a small town and helped me to dream impossible dreams without even knowing she was responsible. 

Later in her life she was a joy to celebrate birthdays and Christmas with as she was always part of our large family gatherings. We loved to feed her with her favorite food in return for the many years she treated us to simple pleasures that tasted like food prepared for kings.

God was revealed to us through her actions and deeds. We rejoice at her death in knowing that we will meet again. 

Our love to all the family who called her, Sister, Mother, Mamaw, Aunt. She was a blessing to us all.

My Mamaw has given me so many precious memories about family and Indiana.  The image of her in her kitchen almost always comes to the forefront. She was extra full of joy in her kitchen, and growing up she'd set my station up at the sink to make suds ("All little girls love to play with suds!" she'd say.)  I loved the idea of doing something she enjoyed as a girl herself, and I especially liked having a part in her happy kitchen at the center of the action.

She'd often mention how my parents took me away to California just as I let her hold me without any fuss (at less than 1 year old).  The distance made our visits extra special.  Whether it was one of her many trips to California or our nearly annual summer visits to Indiana, we always seemed to find time to recount family stories, try to catch up on hugs, and inevitably giggle away at something silly.  I made biennial visits to steal away those fun giggles and savor those Mamaw hugs once my mom passed away.  Justin and I even incorporated one in the middle of a national tour once.  We went from blasting our music at venues to competing for Bingo at Silver Oaks within less than 24 hours, and we loved every minute of it.  We always valued our time together as something special.

Mamaw, you are deeply loved, forever remembered, and dearly missed.

She was my beautiful only sister and we were together many years, thanks to the Lord.

She was a wonderful lady.  I am sorry that you had to lose your Mother.

Vernita was a dear aunt, a great listner, and a person you could sit down with and enjoy a good conversation.  I personally visited Vernita in her last few years at Silver Oaks.  I will miss those conversations as we discussed the "good old days" as well as catching up on current events.  A very dear lady has gone home in Heaven.  You will be missed by a lot folks Vernita. Vernita was the mother of my best friend in high school and college, Connie.  After college, Connie moved far away from me, but often visited her mom in Indiana and would visit me, too.  Vernita gave me my wedding shower, and I'll never forget the wonderful food she made for the guests.  She made a fancy chicken salad plate that impressed everyone.  She was a great cook, and she was always sweet and humble. 
      After Connie passed away, I found out that Vernita and my aunt who lived in Columbus had become best friends and traveling buddies!

I will miss Vernita forever as my sweet mother-in-law and friend. I was blessed to have her in my life for nearly 44 years. I love you, Vernita. You gave me your son, our daughter and two very special grandsons. I will see you again someday.

From early years to later years:
I grew up on 13th Street in the 1950's.  Our neighbors were the Pogues (Vernita, Cleve, Connie and Bobbie).  Connie and I were friends and we took accordion lessons together.  We played a duet in a recital at Donner Park ("On Top of Old Smokey") and I forgot the first note.  But Connie was a real trooper and got us away from a bad start and we ended with a good finish.  The Pogue's house was a gathering point for all the neighborhood kids and their yard had all the best toys and games-swings, a basketball goal and a tetherball pole.  Vernita and Cleve made us feel welcome and we had so much fun there.  They always had lots of pets-dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, fish and I believe there was even an alligator at one point.  Their rabbit, Thumper, was so cute hopping up and down the basement stairs.  A neighborhood favorite (and sometimes a menace) was their dog; Wags.  Wags loved to chase cars and often times received light taps as he nipped at tires.  Vernita was a good second Mom to me as she watched out for all the neighborhood kids whose parents were at work.  One time I was sick and my mother (Wilma McCormick Goss) tried to get me to drink Milk of Magnesia.  I refused to taste it!  Later that evening, Vernita brought me a big glass of chocolate milk and scarfed it down like it was the best thing I had ever had.  Can you guess?  I later found out she had conspired with my Mother and mixed Milk of Magnesia into the chocolate milk.
Later years found us meeting up at Silver Oaks where both she and my Mother; Wilma were residents.  I always visited with Vernita when I went to see Mother and we celebrated both of their birthdays in October for the past several years.
Vernita, I miss you already.  Bob, I wish you the best for you and your family as you celebrate your Mom's life.

I didn't know Vernita very well, but I loved our Aunt Marcile and we knew she loved and cared for Vernita as well as her sister, Sarah Louise.  I'm praying for peace and comfort for all the family who will miss her. She was always well spoken of by our Coles family. May God bless all of you as you treasure memories of her.
