

Alba L. Whiteside, formerly of Bexley, died on October 14, 2010 at Wesley Glen. Born in Lilly Chapel, Ohio on February 22, 1928, to Una Lucille Truitt Whiteside and Alba Lea Whiteside, Sr., he grew up in Ohio and Florida. He graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1946. After serving in the US Army, he attended The Ohio State University and obtained his BS and his JD, having graduated first in his law school class. In 1958, he married N. Virginia Ayres, a Bexley teacher and daughter of Rev. William H. and Loatie Welch Ayres and sister of then Congressman William H. Ayres, Jr. He served as Counsel for the Ohio Turnpike Commission and as Chief Counsel for the Columbus City Attorney before being elected Judge of the Franklin County Common Pleas Court. In 1971, he was elected to the Tenth District Court of Appeals, where he served until his retirement in 1995. During his career, he also served as Chief Judge of the Ohio Courts of Appeals and Chairman of the Ohio Judicial Conference and for more than 20 years was author of Ohio Appellate Practice. In 1988, Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity’s chapter at Capital University College of Law was named Whiteside Inn in his honor. Judge Whiteside also was actively involved in his community and church, having served as Governor of Ohio District of Civitan International, President of the Central Columbus Civitan Club (of which he was a Charter member), Lay Member of the Annual Conference for the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church, President of the United Methodist Men for the Ohio West Conference, President of the Board of Trustees of Bexley United Methodist Church (of which he had been a member for more than 50 years), Member of the Board of Wesley Glen (where he was residing at the time of his death), and as Chairman of the Boards of Methodist Eldercare Services and Wesley Ridge (where he resided from 2006-10). He was predeceased by his wife, parents, and sisters Dr. Lenore Toler and Barbara Barnhart. He is survived and will be very much missed by his daughter, Elizabeth Ayres (Dr. Peter) Whitman of Potomac, MD, much beloved grandson, Alan Benjamin Whitman, of Potomac, MD, brothers Robert (Dina) Whiteside of Largo, FL and Ted (Linda) Whiteside of Columbus, sister, Mae Borasio, of Seminole, FL, honorary grandchildren Linh Ta, Tu (Chris) Ta Wiley, Hoa Ta, Binh Ta, Steven Ta, and Katherine Ta, all of Columbus, step granddaughter, Melissa Whitman, of Potomac, MD, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will see visitors from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Monday, October 18, 2010 at Schoedinger Midtown Chapel, 229 E. State St., Columbus, OH. Funeral on Tues., Oct. 19, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Bexley United Methodist Church, 2567 E. Broad St., Bexley, OH, Rev. R. Robert Kimes and Rev. Dorothea Maloney officiating, with interment immediately following at Green Lawn Cemetery. Memorial service on Tues., Oct. 19, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Wesley Ridge. Shiva prayer service on Tues., Oct. 19, 2010 at 7:00 PM in Columbus (email [email protected] for address) and on Wed., Oct. 20, 2010 at 7:00 PM at the residence of Elizabeth and Peter Whitman. The family requests no flowers and in lieu of flowers, suggests that donations be made in Judge Whiteside’s memory to Methodist Eldercare Services – Whiteside Memorial, 5155 N.
