Alexandria D. Wine

Alexandria Demetrius Darin Wine (Alex, Sasha), age 98, of Gahanna, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2013, at St. Ann's Mount Carmel hospital, following a brief illness. Alex was born in Homestead, PA, on August 1, 1915, the daughter of Father Demetrius S. Darin, a Greek Catholic (formerly Russian Orthodox) Priest and Anna Guemann Capitola Darin. Alex, the second oldest of seven children, also lived in Lakewood, OH, Detroit and Flint, MI, and Barberton, OH in her early years as her father had parishes in those locations, although she spent most of her adult life in the Columbus area. She graduated from high school in Barberton and moved to Columbus before graduating from business school. Alex and her loving husband of over 71 years, Bob, were married on September 2, 1938, in Richmond, IN, at Central Methodist Episcopal Church. They were married again in a second ceremony performed by her father several weeks after the original wedding ceremony. Before starting their family, Alex and Bob were both employed at DCSC in Columbus during WWII. Alex enjoyed several hobbies such as vegetable and flower gardening, solving crossword puzzles, sewing various creations for her five daughters, and cooking traditional, Russian dishes such as Halupki (cabbage rolls) and Orechovnik (nut rolls). She was an accomplished, classical pianist and her favorite selections included "Prelude in C Sharp Minor," by Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov and "Country Gardens," an English folk tune of unknown composition. In her later years, Alex enjoyed watching Turner Classic Movies, OSU football, and following national politics. Above all else, her greatest joy was her husband Bob, her five daughters, and her 10 grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Cherie Anne (Thomas W.) Prasuhn/ Tega Cay, SC, Judith Ellen Wine (Jack Levy)/Columbus, Cynthia Louise (Stephen M.) White/Gahanna, Sonja Aileen (Michael P.) Gallagher/Gainesville, FL, and Jeannine Marilee (David W.) Voris/Fishers, IN, as well as her grandchildren, Renee Lynn Prasuhn (Benjamin D.) Wills/Maplewood, NJ, Brian Lee Prasuhn/Philadelphia, PA, Meghan Anne Gallagher (Ryan J. Sladek)/Tampa, FL, Michael Patrick Gallagher (Tara L. McDowell)/Gainesville, FL, Daniel Stephen White/Gahanna, and Alexander David Voris/Fishers, IN. She was also the proud great grandmother of fraternal twins Charlotte Lani and Madison Lia Wills/Maplewood, NJ and identical twins Luke Michael and Noah Edward Gallagher/Gainesville, FL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. Wine, and siblings Vera Demetrius Darin Tinkler, Vianor Demetrius Darin, Xenia Demetrius Darin, Vincent Demetrius Darin, Victor Demetrius Darin, and Demetrius S. Darin. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Monday, November 11, 2013 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, Gahanna. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
