

Ann Hutchins Downer died January 12, 2015. Born in Winchester, Massachusetts June 22, 1924. Preceded in death by mother, Helen M. Downer; father, Charles P. Downer; and brother, Robert T. Downer. She held a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from Syracuse University, a Certificate in Physical Therapy from the D. T. Watson School of Physiatrics, University of Pittsburgh; and a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Stanford University. She was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force. She was licensed to practice physical therapy, and did so in seven states. She specialized in the treatment of polio patients, industrial accidents, and general patients. She directed the Physical Academic program at the Albany Hospital School of Physical Therapy in Albany, New York; was on the faculty of Stanford University in physical therapy; served as Assistant Director of the Physical Therapy Division, at the School of Allied Medical Professions of The Ohio State University from January 1976 into her retirement in June 1985. She authored two text books and many articles on physical therapy relating to people and animals. She was listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Ohio, World Who's Who of Women, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the Midwest, Notable Americans of the Bicentennial Era, Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans, and Dictionary of International Biographies, London, England. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Portland, Oregon; a life member of the American Physical Therapy Association; Stanford University Alumni Association; Syracuse University Alumni Association and Syracuse University band; and Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.
