Anna Maria Carney, age 87, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026, at Select Specialty Hospital in Columbus, Ohio surrounded by her children. She was born on May 4, 1939 in the Czech Republic to the late Anna (Bandhauer) and Josef Oppl.
Anna and her family were founding members of Church of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, where she was a devoted and active parishioner. Her faith was an important part of her life, as was her family. She found great joy in welcoming loved ones into her home, caring for her family, and especially spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul L. Carney; her daughter, Kathleen Cook; her sisters, Marianna (Adolf) Phillips and Evelina Barta; her sister-in-law, Ursula Oppl; brother-in-law from her husband’s side, Rev. John Carney; sisters-in-law from her husband’s side, Jane (Bob) Lanctot, Helen (Ed) Frey, and Loretta (Ray) Flohr.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Josie (Jeff) Boston, Maureen (Steve) Cronin, and Paul “PJ” (Catherine) Carney; her grandchildren, John (Marva) Boston, Paul Boston, Ann (Josh) Kappes, Lauren Boston, Maura Grace Cronin, Stephen Paul Cronin, and Róisín Kathleen Cronin; and her great-grandchildren, Sylvia Boston, George Boston, Sebastian Kappes, and Rosemary Kappes. She is also survived by her brother, Josef “Bepi” Oppl, and brother-in-law, Jupp Barta.
Family and friends will be received from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Schoedinger East, 5360 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43232, with a prayer service beginning at 6:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Church of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, 5225 Refugee Road, Columbus, Ohio 43232. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 11539 National Road SW, Pataskala, Ohio 43062.
Anna’s loving spirit, devotion to her faith, and unwavering love for her family will remain cherished in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
