On August 17, 2024, Anne Marie Jay died at the age of 80 leaving a legacy of kindness. She was born to Anne and Ben Beegan in 1944 in Cleveland, OH and was raised there with 3 brothers, Ralph, Paul, and Bill. After graduating from Hoban Dominican High School, she earned her Bachelor of Nursing from Ohio State University. Shortly after, she joined the Navy and served on the ship USS Repose in 1969. She met her husband Steve at the Navy base in Charleston, S.C. and they married on July 12, 1969. In Indianapolis, she raised 4 children (Stephen, Audrey, Matt and Alan) and found time to work as an RN on a pediatric unit and then in an ob/gyn office.
Anne was a lifelong learner completing two masters, one in General Studies from SMU and another in Environmental Studies from St. Mary’s of the Woods. She was an avid reader and stayed active walking daily and taking classes at the YMCA with friends. She spent countless hours nurturing her garden and appreciating the natural beauty of her surroundings, no matter where she travelled. Nothing made Grannie Anne happier than spending time with children and grandchildren, listening to them recount adventures, however big or small. She encouraged them to believe in their unique gifts, contribute to their communities, and cherish time with family and friends. Memories of her at summer gatherings at the family cabin in MN will be treasured. Her warmth and kindness were legendary.
Her many contributions will be deeply missed and maybe best summarized by an officer in 1969, “…often worked many extra hours, particularly during periods when large numbers of casualties were received, and the resultant patient load was heavy. Your selfless devotion to duty, loyalty, your enthusiastic cheerful attitude and ability to work as a team member has contributed significantly …”
Preceded in death by brothers Ralph and Paul. Survived by husband Steve, children Stephen (Patricia), Audrey (Phil), Matt (Jessica) and Alan, grandchildren Hayden, Addie, Calvin, Anna, Charlie and George, brother Bill (Kim) and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, please spend a joyful day outside with family and friends and consider a contribution to your favorite local nonprofit in memory of Anne.
Memorial services will take place on October 4th, with visitation from 1-2pm and service at 2pm at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. St. Luke's is located at 100 W. 86th Street.
