

Born June 9, 1921, at his parents Curve Road farm in Berlin Township, Delaware County, Ohio to Bernard and Mary Hatten. Following graduation from Brown Township High School (class of 12!), he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in 1943. At OSU he resided in the Tower Club located inside the Horseshoe and was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Texnikoi, Sigma Xi and Phi Eta Sigma honorary societies. In his spare time, he earned spending money by delivering eggs in his 1935 Ford Coupe from his family farm to over 100 families in Upper Arlington and Columbus. Following graduation, he earned a Master of Automotive Engineering from the Chrysler Institute of Engineering in Detroit, MI in 1946 where he contributed to the war effort by working on the conversion from autos to Sherman Tanks.
Following his work at Chrysler, he worked at Curtiss-Wright Corp, Westinghouse Electric Company and ended his career at ABB (formerly Accuray Corp) where he retired in 1997. Dad always saw the highlight of his professional career as working on the design of the Nautilus project while at Westinghouse…the world’s first nuclear submarine. He was granted 4 patents and authored several technical papers. Another highlight of his working career was serving as the President of the Franklin County Chapter of OSPE, a professional engineer organization.
Bernard was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where he served as an usher.
Bernard was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Eileen Manter Hatten, also of Delaware, Ohio.
Bernard leaves behind a sister Ester of Ashtabula, Oh and 3 children David (Barbara) Hatten of Powell, OH; Sally (James)LeCrone of Scottsdale, Az and Kevin (Kathy)Hatten of El Dorado Hills, Ca. He also leaves behind 6 grandchildren – Todd Hatten, Jennifer & Jackie Hatten, Matthew LeCrone, Kyle Hatten, Kellie Grubbs as well as Great Grandsons Nolan and Caleb Hatten.
Services will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Upper Arlington on Friday, Sept 9 at 10:30. Family will be greeting visitors at 10:00 and a reception will follow at 11:30.
