Betty Lue arrived in 1933 in Gilmer County, West Virginia, during the depression. She was born at the family home to Henry Lewis, a schoolteacher, and Lydia Lewis. She was the youngest of ten children: eight girls and two boys.
Betty earned her elementary education at the one room Oak Dale School and the two room Grass Run School. She then attended, and graduated from, Harrisville High School. Betty excelled in her studies, consistently earning the highest marks.
After graduation, Betty moved to Columbus, Ohio and lived with two of her sisters in a home they rented on Cleveland Ave. She worked at Ohio Bell as an operator. During that time, she was introduced to Phillip Joseph "Joe" Gilliland, whom she married in the fall of 1956.
Betty and Joe eventually moved to Westerville, Ohio, where they raised three sons. They both had strong commitments to their church, attending the Westerville Nazarene Church and the Columbia Center Community Church. They built and shared their lives together through 61 years of marriage, until sadly Joe passed in 2017.
Betty will be remembered for her spirituality, her kindness, her sense of humor, her perseverance, and her love of family and friends. Her sister Doris had written a poem, which described Betty as "...always loving, always giving, always in love with laughing and living".
Betty is mourned and missed by her family; her sister, Arlis, her sons, Phil, Jeff, and John (Mel), and her grandchildren, Emily, Grace, Jacob, and Audrey Rose.
