

Brad was born Gordon Bradley Hummel on February 26, 1934 to Fritz and Wanda (Gordon) Hummel in Columbus. He is a proud graduate of East High School and The Ohio State University, where he obtained a Bachelor’s and a law degree.
Brad was in ROTC during college and the United States Air Force after graduation. He was particularly proud of his service to our country as the assistant manager of the officer’s club.
He was appointed an Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio under Robert F Kennedy, a personal hero of his. One of his favorite stories was of having the privilege and honor of meeting him.
Brad spent most of his career in private practice. He worked for Gingher & Christensen, followed by Baker & Hostetler. He later retired at age 80 as a City of Columbus attorney defending firefighters, police officers and medics. Even at 91 he was prepared to conduct a deposition should he be needed.
A lifelong, passionate proponent of equal rights, Brad was a member of the Metropolitan Area Church Council. He helped organize their Racial Unity Services, bringing together church communities of all races.
Brad had a long and illustrious amateur sports career. He played pick-up basketball in Upper Arlington and church softball for King Ave United Methodist Church, where he was a long-time member. He was an avid runner who specialized in local 5k races. He enjoyed jazz music, driveway parties, British mystery shows, OSU football and chocolate milkshakes.
Celebrating his life are wife Kathy and daughters Julie (RJ) Reimers, Stephanie Hummel and Christina (Trey Salm) Hummel; granddaughters Katelyn Reimers, Anna (Austin) Hoepfner and Megan Reimers; and many more family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents and cousin Bud Gordon.
The family thanks The Forum at Knightsbridge and Capital City Hospice for the wonderful care they took of Brad. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
Calling hours will be held Saturday, October 25th from 9-11 am at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Rd. A service will follow at 11 am. The private family burial will be at Ream Cemetery in Sugar Grove. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Brad and have a Manhattan and food at the Hummel’s at 5 pm.
