

Carl "Blackie" Black was taken in the Arms of Angels to his final resting place Tuesday September 6th 2016. Born May 15, 1917, in Columbus, Ohio, Blackie spent 99 wonderful years making friends and expanding his family as a gifted storyteller and humorist. Raised on a farm in central Ohio, Blackie was the oldest of twelve, helping to support his family, consisting of two brothers and nine sisters, working part time at a gas station while going to school. A Graduate of Mifflin High School, he enlisted in the US Army in 1940, serving during WWII as a Medical Technician in the Pacific theatre, stationed in New Guinea and Australia. He married his loving wife of 75 years, Marianne, in Prescott, Arkansas December 13th, 1941, just one week after the attack on Pearl Harbor. One week later he was shipped overseas for a three and a half year tour of duty. Returning home to Ohio after the war, Blackie spent sixteen years as a welder with the Pennsylvania Railroad, followed by twenty six years with the Westinghouse Corporation, and fifty six years with Schoedinger Funeral Service. He truly had a calling to comfort people in their time of loss and grief, with his gentleness and his gift of humor. A proud Citizen of Hilltop, USA, for sixty years, Blackie is a Mason (Westgate Lodge), a member and Deacon of Hoge Memorial Presbyterian church for over 50 years , a member of the YMCA, a volunteer and supporter of numerous westside organizations over the years, including the Westgate Bean Dinner. Blackie's last six years were enjoyed in his home in Haughn Glen, Grove City, Ohio with his wife, son, and German Shepherds Tasha and Mia. He continued to enjoy and support veteran events and was given a Key to The City by the Mayor in 2013. Also, he is a Charter Member of Honor Flight. Blackie was a proud WWII Veteran, and one of his most cherished times was his Honor Flight trip to the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC in 2010. He loved woodworking and his garden and yard work. A true Buckeye Fan, he enjoyed sports and also supported his West High Cowboys, and Kent State Golden Flashes where his son of sixty six years, Bemis, graduated. But all his talents and skills came together as a Loving Husband and Dad. Survived by his wife of 75 years, Marianne (95), Son Bemis (66), Sister Ginny (Horne) and many Nephews, Nieces, Cousins, Adopted Family, and Friends.
Preceded in death by his Mother Flora (Miller), Father Clay, Brothers Roy and Harold, Sisters Ruth (Beaver), Florence (Echelbarger), Lela (Kroegel), Waneda (Schneider), Edith (Irvine), Lillian (Tranor), Rose (Van Matre), and Mary (Root).
Family will receive friends from 3-7:00 pm on Monday, September 12, 2016 followed by a masonic service at 7:00 pm at the SCHOEDINGER HILLTOP CHAPEL 3030 W. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio where funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. Interment Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
